Opening an account at BanBajío bank (pronounced “Ban-bahio”) was not difficult at all. At the time of opening we already had temporary residence and using it we could open an account in the bank.
The requirements are the following:
- Passport
- Temporary residence (Or permanent residence)
- Proof of address (It can be the electricity or water bill, it must be an original document)
Banks always ask for proof of address and it must be original document. Otherwise they do not open the account. In the opening process the bank will make a copy of the document and the original document will be returned to you. In some cases, the bank asks you to make a copy of the proof of address yourself.
After delivering the documents, you will be asked for your email address and Mexican telephone number. At the end of the registration, the bank will say that the next business day the company in charge of verifying the address will come to your house to take photos of your house and verify that you really live there, at the same address that appears on your electricity bill.
The next day the bank will notify you that your account is ready and you can go and pick up the bank debit card and you can deposit the minimum opening amount or the amount you want.
The bank requires a minimum amount to activate the account, which is 1000 pesos and this sum must be the average monthly balance so that the bank does not charge the monthly service fee.
BanBajío bank also provides trust service which allows foreigners to buy and own property in Quintana Roo.
