Yesterday we went to the Banco BanCoppel branch in the city of Cancún, the branch located on Tulum Avenue (Av. Tulum 17, between Avenida Uxmal and Jose García de la Torre, 77500 Cancún, Q.R.). The BanCoppel bank is almost always located on the second floor, inside the electronics and household goods supermarket that they sell on the first floor. One might think that there probably isn’t any bank right there inside this supermarket. Something that seemed super strange to us. Then we found cashiers where people pay and there are bank assistents.
Documents we have presented:
- Temporary residence
- CURP registration certificate
- Proof of address (Electricity bill from the CFE company for the months from May to July 2023)
- Passport
After introducing the bank worker, they carefully with great interest looked at our temporary residence IDs and said that our CURPs have the letter X, and this is a serious problem since the bank’s system does not allow registering people like that. We can remind you that the letter X is always put inside CURP code if someone has no second surname (Like in many cases of foreigners) Could it be that this was discrimination or an agenda of rejection of foreigners that was set by bank officials? We don’t know, but we had a lot of anger and anguish… We have asked to speak with the branch manager to try to resolve the problem. But, he was not in the bank at the time. When I tried to call the BanCoppel bank support number, they told me that “There should be no problem opening the account, even having I said that, they responded that they cannot accept or make calls and that support “does not know anything” about what is happening in their system at the bank.
After returning home and returning to the bank the next day we hardly had any hope of opening the account. We have spoken to the manager and he said the same thing: “Our system does not allow us to open accounts with the letter hate everyone. After an hour of cursing everyone, we have found a solution. So don’t worry, there is a solution:
We recommend: do not despair, do not lose faith in Mexico and Mexican banks and try to open the account in another branch of the same bank. Sometimes this can help you open the account at another branch.
We have done the same with BanCoppel and for us it was super surprising. We couldn’t believe that after arriving at another BanCoppel branch located next to the “Las Américas” shopping center (Av. Tulum Sur #270, Centro, 77500 Cancún, Q.R.) one of the agents without saying anything bad or giving us other rejections began to serve us. It was super slow, but after half an hour they opened the account and we had to deposit the 300 pesos, scan the fingerprints on our fingers and sign documents, they opened the bank account for us and gave us the BanCoppel debit card. They also helped log into the BanCoppel application on the phone. Problem solved.
